Kangana Ranaut confirms Queen 2 with Vikas Bahl
Kangana Ranaut has confirmed that she has begun working on Queen 2 with director Vikas Bahl, who helmed the original 2014 film. Asked in an interview if she has started shooting, Ranaut said: “Vikas Bahl and I are coming together. But I can’t reveal too much… Yes, I am acting again.”
The confirmation ends months of speculation and report-based coverage about the project. Reports have indicated that unlike the original Queen, which followed a small-town woman navigating life in Europe, the sequel will present Rani as a city-based character.
The narrative will reportedly centre on a new journey of self-realisation triggered by a key life event, with the setting shifting across multiple Indian metropolitan cities rather than international travel. The original cast including Rajkummar Rao and Lisa Haydon is unlikely to return, with Bahl reportedly assembling a fresh ensemble.
Production is expected to begin in a Mumbai studio with sets replicating a North Indian city, before moving to metropolitan locations.
Ranaut’s comments came in a wider interview where she also paid tribute to the late Asha Bhosle, recalling how she had insisted on using Bhosle’s original voice for the song “Hungama Ho Gaya” in the first Queen rather than re-recording it with a new singer. The timing of the Queen 2 confirmation, coming in the immediate aftermath of Bhosle’s passing, gave the conversation a poignant quality that resonated strongly across the industry.
The original Queen earned Ranaut her second National Film Award for Best Actress and remains widely regarded as a defining role in her career. A sequel had been discussed on and off for years, making this week’s confirmation one of the more noteworthy Bollywood announcements of the current season. No cast, release date or production house details have been officially confirmed beyond Ranaut and Bahl’s reunion at the creative helm.
