A.R. Rahman spearheads search for Tamil Nadu’s next voice on ‘Tamil Idol’
Oscar-winning music maestro A.R. Rahman is officially leading the search for Tamil Nadu’s next singing sensation with the launch of Tamil Idol. This talent hunt represents the first-ever Tamil-language edition of the globally renowned singing competition format, produced as a collaborative venture between regional television network Sony Vizha and production powerhouse Fremantle India.
Affectionately known as the Isai Puyal (Musical Storm), A.R. Rahman is spearheading the project to actively discover, celebrate, and nurture untapped vocal talent. In an official statement, Rahman emphasized that the search for new voices is at the heart of music, expressing his excitement to uncover fresh perspectives and untold stories while giving extraordinary voices a platform to be celebrated.
Auditions for the reality show officially commenced in August 2026, utilizing a hybrid approach designed to maximize reach across the state. Aspiring singers can participate through in-person auditions held at key locations across Tamil Nadu, or by submitting their entries digitally via the Sony LIV app and the dedicated “Tamil Idol Audition” portal.
This initiative aligns seamlessly with Rahman’s long-standing legacy of mentorship and his dedication to championing new musical voices, previously demonstrated through projects like his KM Music Conservatory, the 2018 YouTube series ARRived, and the NEXA Music initiative.
The highly anticipated program will be broadcast on Sony Vizha and available for global streaming on Sony LIV.
